As she looks ahead to the release of her new EP, Pretty Lie To Me, this October, soulful indie pop singer/songwriter JANELLE KROLL is dropping a new single, “Blush,” today, September 22 via NYC indie label Lokal Legend.

When asked about the inspiration behind “Blush,” JANELLE explains, “A reddening of the face as a sign of embarrassment or shame – that’s one of the definitions to the entry ‘blush.’ What if instead we thought about this word as an expression of desire without embarrassment and shame? This song is about pushing the boundaries of your identity as a sensual being, a celebration of unbound desire.”

“Blush” features producer Aalias who co-wrote and co-produced Eminem’s “The Monster” feat. Rihanna and DJ Snake’s “Middle,” among many other notable releases.

“Janelle and I have known each other for almost four years,” Aalias shares. “‘Blush’ is one of the first songs we started working on together, and we knew it was special the moment we first recorded it — but something was always missing. We kept coming back to it over the years and finally got it to a place where we’re both ready to present it to the world. I’m really excited that ‘Blush’ is finally seeing the light of day!”

The Chicago-bred, NYC-based songstress is also looking forward to sharing her new music with intimate audiences via a tour run hitting major U.S. markets including her hometown of Brooklyn, as well as Boston, DC, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco; see below for the full routing details.

KROLL developed her singing and songwriting chops through various creative partnerships, including her time singing lead vocals while on tour with indietronica outfit Big Data in the summer of 2014 as well as a co-writing credit with Estelle on “Time Share (Suite 509)” off her 2015 album, True Romance. She first left her mark on the world with her 2015 hit, “Sunny Days,” which was featured on Spotify’s influential New Music Playlist. The track later went Top 10 on the streaming platform’s US Viral Chart and Global Viral Chart.

Further backed by ongoing support from tastemaker media outlets, KROLL secured a coveted performance slot on internationally celebrated music festival Lollapalooza in her native Chicago in 2015. Elsewhere, KROLL has worked as a featured vocalist on a handful of tracks from buzzing electronic dance music acts, including Moon Boots (“Utopia”) and Autograf (“Metaphysical”), as well as house music veteran Dennis Ferrer on “Mind Ur Step,” which dominated radio stations across Europe.

Pretty Lie To Me will follow JANELLE’s debut EP Outsider, which was released Fall 2016. Striking a delicate balance between pop brightness and electronic R&B dusk, Outsider displayed her irrefutable gift to capture a spectrum of emotions: powerful and delicate, confident and vulnerable, beautiful and sexy, raw and sultry, earthly and ethereal. Pretty Lie To Me is a few shades brighter, a sultry romp through R&B sensuality, pop sensibility, indie dreamscapes, and vocal-driven melodies. The new collection of songs sees JANELLE defying genre boundaries and artistic expectations with no regard for rules, but her own.

When serendipity and opportunity collide, there’s only one thing to say. Singer and songwriter Janelle Kroll realized the appropriate response upon relocating to New York from her native Chicago in 2013. “Life is so unpredictable and erratic that you just need to show up, be prepared, and say, ‘Yes,’” she explains. “I like to get out of my element, challenge myself, and show up somewhere nobody needs me to be. That’s where I’ve been able to make a mark.”

Thus far, she’s continually delivered when these moments present themselves. In 2014, she went from singing lead vox on tour with Big Data to penning songs for Estelle by subscribing to that philosophy. However, she formally introduced her soulful pop with the bright harmonies and nocturnal R&B of 2015’s independently released “Sunny Days.”

Spotify chose the track for its coveted New Music Tuesday Playlist. It went Top 10 on the hub’s U.S. Viral Chart and Top 15 on the Global Viral Chart, and amidst the flurry of the release was invited to play Lollapalooza 2015. The track serves as a fitting gateway into her sultry and sensual delivery and towering dynamics.

“The song feels universal, but it’s also highly personal at the same time,” she shares. “You want to stop thinking about that person who’s under your skin. The best case scenario would be that it works out and you get through to them, but you know you just need to move on. In my music I’m most interested in exposing dualities, tension points, from which I can dive in. And from there all I can do is be as honest as possible.”

“Sunny Days” heralds the release of her debut EP. Throughout, she strikes a delicate balance between pop brightness and electronic R&B dusk. Her airy take on Joni Mitchell’s “Down To You (My Confidante)” clearly illustrates that push-and-pull.

Everything springs from a singular style that veers left from indie music’s typical posturing. She coyly dubs her sound, “dependent music,” adding “I sing about emotional dependencies.”

It’s that kind of openness which makes you want to say, “Yes” to her.
