Through humor, meticulous research, and a bounty of civic pride, Jen Bilik—Knock Knock’s founder and the CEO of the Who’s There Group—and co-author Kate Sullivan celebrate the second-largest city in America and the many people, places, sights, sounds, and even tastes that make it great.
Thanks to decades of surfer movies, over-the-top reality shows, and judgy reporting by our eastern and northern counterparts (we’re looking at you, NYC and San Francisco!), Los Angeles is perhaps the most misunderstood—and projected upon—city in the world. L.A. transplant of twenty years, Bilik worked with native Angeleno Sullivan to change all of that with This Is (Not) L.A.. In the full-color, 168-page book, these L.A. experts and defenders tackle 18 common myths about Los Angeles, proving that their city is neither a desert nor full of airheads, smog, or crappy food. Eight spotlight sections offer both a deeper look into L.A.’s innovative history and culture, served up with a side of humorous civic introspection. In his foreword, the renowned Pulitzer prize–winning Los Angeles Times food critic Jonathan Gold writes, “When you live in Los Angeles, you are used to having your city explained to you by others, often by people who parachute in from out of town…the Los Angeles that most of us live in is a different beast entirely, a city of almost unimaginable diversity.”
Growing up in the Bay Area, Bilik carried her own preconceived notions of her southern neighbors: “Hatred of Los Angeles was our birthright—though we characterized it as a rivalry,” she recalls in This Is (Not) L.A.’s epilogue. “The Bay Area [saw] Los Angelenos as materialistic, selfish, and dumb.” In her early twenties, Bilik relocated to New York to pursue a career in publishing. While serving as editor of one book on Hollywood history with the Chateau Marmont Hotel and another on Los Angeles urbanism, Bilik’s outlook began to change. Through frequent trips to the West Coast, Bilik dove deep with L.A. experts, aficionados, and historians and began to explore Los Angeles like a local. By the late 1990s, Bilik was hooked and decided to make the cross-country move. She recalls, “I soon discovered that Los Angeles was an amazing place. It had culture. It had nature. It had smarts. It felt vibrant and dynamic…The people I was meeting were intellectual and interesting. I congratulated myself for cracking a well-kept secret, until I realized that, with turn-of-the-century populations of 3.6 million (city) and 9.5 million (county), the secret wasn’t so well kept after all—wearing my Northern California blinders, I just hadn’t been in on it.”
