SPARC AND JAZZ DISPENSARY ANNOUNCE LAUNCH OF THE
“PRIVATE STOCK SERIES”

FIRST-EVER OFFICIAL COLLABORATION BETWEEN INDUSTRY LEADERS IN MUSIC AND CANNABIS

LIMITED-EDITION 45 RPM VINYL SINGLE, PRIVATE STOCK SERIES #001, TO BE RELEASED EXCLUSIVELY THROUGH SPARC RETAIL LOCATIONS FOR 420

PROGRAM TO CELEBRATE CANNABIS LIFESTYLE
AND ITS TIMELESS CONNECTION TO MUSIC

San Francisco, CA. (March 20, 2018) – For 420, the annual celebration of cannabis culture that falls this year on Friday, April 20th, leading cannabis industry partner SPARC and the Jazz Dispensary label announce the first installment of the Private Stock Series.

Exclusively available at one of SPARC’s four dispensary outlets, Private Stock Series #001 features two classic songs that exemplify soul, funk, and good times. Not coincidentally, both also reference the joys of cannabis. This release is pressed on translucent blue colored vinyl and pressed in a limited run of only 500 copies at Jack White’s Third Man Pressing, out of Detroit, MI.

The single features “Mary Jane” by Bobby Rush on side “A” and “Fire Eater” by Rusty Bryant on side “B, both first released in 1971. “Fire Eater” features an often-sampled break from drummer Idris Muhammad that listeners will easily recognize and of course, the incendiary sax lines of Bryant himself.

Produced in tandem with Jazz Dispensary, Private Stock Series #001 will retail for $15 on April 20th at all SPARC outlets. Those who are shopping for cannabis that day will receive a $5 discount on the album if they spend $125 on dispensary goods; those who spend $200 or more will get this one-of-a-kind artifact for free while supplies last.

Private Stock Series #001 exemplifies a pairing that is easily made. “There’s a natural relationship between cannabis and music,” said SPARC director of product Joshua Hoffman. “Both cannabis and albums are tactile, something you can hold. Cannabis and music both alter your mind.”

Hoffman was inspired to do a one-of-a-kind album this year to also recognize Record Store Day, which is on Saturday, April 21. “We’re helping to create the good culture we want to be a part of,” he explained. This is a new venture for Jazz Dispensary, who has released an album for every Record Store Day event since April 2016 when their acclaimed Cosmic Stash box set launched the label. “We’re excited to continue the celebration for vinyl’s biggest day by creating a little buzz ahead of time,” says Jazz Dispensary producer and curator, Ryan Wilson. “Hopefully we can continue to drive conversation and celebration around one of the world’s most enjoyable pairings.”

“The songs are cannabis-inspired,” Hoffman said, “but they’re also just great songs with a lot of soul, funk, and jazz elements to them. These are real American musical styles that appeal to a diverse set of people.”

About Jazz Dispensary:
Launched in 2016 with the groundbreaking four-LP deluxe package, Jazz Dispensary: Cosmic Stash, in which mood-based albums of soul-jazz, jazz-funk, and cosmic explorations were compiled to match the effects of cannabis strains, the label has gone on to cement itself as a leader in quality jazz reissues and special packages.

Known to push the envelope for cannabis lifestyle crossover, the label released Holiday Treats, a compilation of funky and far-out Christmas tunes housed in an appropriately Gummy-themed cover for RSD’s Black Friday event, while the following year (2017) saw the launch of the Top Shelf Series, an album-centric program focused on unearthing deep classics and presenting them in the highest possible quality, featuring audio remastered from the original analog tapes. The label’s reissue of the seminal spiritual world-fusion masterwork, Alice Coltrane and Joe Henderson’s The Elements, earned the Best New Reissue tag from Pitchfork, while releases from Rusty Bryant, Charles Kynard, Pucho & The Latin Soul Brothers, Gary Bartz NTU Troop, and Azar Lawrence continued to receive critical praise. Moon Rocks, a space-themed party record comprised of rare boogie, jazz-funk, and disco tracks followed for Black Friday 2017, with a second installment of burners from 2016’s Cosmic Stash, Soul Diesel Vol. 2, set for Record Store Day’s main event of April 21, 2018.

Two new vinyl titles are being reissued November 3rd as part of Jazz Dispensary’s Top Shelf Series: Azar Lawrence’s Bridge Into The New Age, the long out of print spiritual jazz masterwork originally released on Prestige, and Pucho & The Latin Soul Brothers’ incendiary Latin-funk boogaloo get-down, Jungle Fire!, also from the Prestige catalog. This will be the first time in over 30 years these releases will be made available on 180-gram vinyl and the first-ever vinyl reissue of Azar Lawrence’s material.

In celebration of Bridge Into The New Age’s reissue release, Azar Lawrence is confirmed to perform two shows at Jazz Standard in New York tomorrow (10/24) and Wednesday (10/25), followed by a show at Zebulon in Los Angeles on Sunday, November 12. The Los Angeles show will be DJ’d by Aquarium Drunkard and Lawrence will be playing the album in its entirety backed by an all-star band: Steve Turre (trombone), Benito Gonzalez (piano), Roy McCurdy (drums), Jeff Littleton (Bass) and special guests. More info about both releases below.

As with all Top Shelf releases, both albums have been remastered from the original analog tapes, pressed on 180-gram audiophile-quality vinyl at Quality Record Pressings (QRP), and housed in faithfully reproduced, old-school style replica jackets. Each LP will have a limited-edition worldwide run of 1,000 copies, complete with a Jazz Dispensary “Authorized Dealer” window cling. The titles will also be available at streaming outlets, mastered for iTunes, and in Hi-Res digital (96/24 and 192/24).

The Top Shelf Series launched March 31st with Rusty Bryant’s incendiary soul-jazz statement, Fire Eater and Charles Kynard’s deeply funky Afro-Disiac. Followed by reissues of Joe Henderson & Alice Coltrane’s The Elements and Gary Bartz NTU Troop’s Harlem Bush Music – Uhuru this past July. Recently The 3 Pieces’ Vibes of Truth and Funk Inc.’s self-titled album shared the spotlight. The album-centric program, which is focused on reintroducing rare and previously unavailable titles, offered eight releases in 2017 with more on the way for 2018.

More about Azar Lawrence and Bridge Into The New Age:
Embarking upon his musical journey as a very young man, Azar Lawrence honed his craft among musicians who would be remembered as larger than life: Miles Davis, Elvin Jones, and John Coltrane to name a few. Lawrence composed, produced and performed with acclaimed jazz luminary McCoy Tyner for over five priceless years and for 3 years with the late great Elvin Jones, two-thirds of the classic John Coltrane Quartet made an indelible mark on Lawrence’s life and music, imbuing him with a spirituality that would last a life time.

While still a teenager, he began playing with legends and, at just 17, he played his first professional gigs abroad with Clark Terry and Muddy Waters. By age 21, Lawrence had worked with War, Ike & Tina Turner, and Charles Watts 103rd St Band. Lawrence would follow that playing for almost the next decade with two Coltrane alumni, drummer Elvin Jones and pianist McCoy Tyner. In 1974, Lawrence recorded with Miles Davis on Dark Magus: Live at Carnegie Hall, performed on Marvin Gaye‘s Here My Dear and saw his compositions recorded by Stanley Turrentine and Earth, Wind & Fire, among many others.

A powerful musical force not to be slowed by the relentless gigging, before the age of 25, Lawrence recorded and released several albums of his own: Bridge Into The New Age, People Moving, Summer Solstice, and Shadow Dancing.

An absolute masterwork collection from Lawrence (tenor sax), recorded during a fertile period for adventurous jazz, Bridge Into The New Age is an expansive, forward-leaning, spiritual-tinged outlier in the Prestige Records catalog for its ambitious embrace of a large lineup, including heavyweights Julian Priester (tb), Woody Shaw (trumpet), Ray Straughter and Hadley Caliman (flute), Arthur Blythe (alto sax), Joe Bonner (piano), Clint Houston and John Heard (bass), Billy Hart (drums), Leon “Ndugu” Chancler, Mtume, Guillerme Franco, and Kenneth Nash (percussion), Woody Murray (vibraphone), and the inimitable Jean Carn (vocals). Sonically the sound is close to a recording from the Black Jazz label – richly textured, conversational, and powerfully intimate, with knotty unison lines bending and twisting around Carn’s supple yet strident delivery, especially on the title track. Elsewhere, the group stretches out and explores the ethereal, free-flowing world of “The Beautiful and Omnipresent Love, and propels itself mightily through the modal-funk burners, “Forces of Nature” and “Warriors of Peace.

This is the first-ever vinyl reissue of Lawrence’s masterful statement, Bridge Into The New Age (recorded in 1974 at Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, CA). An essential addition to any jazz collection, this landmark recording proudly displays its ancestral roots as a forbearer of the current jazz revival as embodied by Kamasi Washington and the West Coast Get Down. A transcendent and powerful statement.

More about Pucho & The Latin Soul Brothers and Jungle Fire!:
A pivotal figure in the Latin boogaloo movement that fused Latin, jazz, and funk styles during the sixties, Harlem-born percussionist and timbalero Henry “Pucho” Brown led the Latin Soul Brothers through seven fiery, hard-grooving albums for the Prestige label that showed off the depth and breadth of the all-star group’s musical stylings, covering artists as diverse as James Brown, Herbie Hancock, the Temptations, Duke Ellington, and the Beatles.

One of the greatest, most sought-after albums by legendary combo Pucho and the Latin Soul Brothers, Jungle Fire! lives up to its name with five extended, incendiary instrumental cuts. Joined by hard-grooving cohorts Neal Creque (electric piano), Bernard Purdie (drums), Billy Butler (guitar), Eddie and Al Pazant (horns), Joe Armstrong (congas), and Billy Bivins (vibes), Pucho demonstrates why he’s considered the absolute master when it comes to combining Latin, soul, funk, and jazz into a signature, danceable sound. With cuts like the group’s incendiary take on the Temptations’ hit “Cloud 9, to the buoyant swagger of Gladys Knight & The Pips’ “Got Myself A Good Man, the drum-driven double team of Pucho and Purdie delivers a crackling backbone of groove throughout. Producers take note: the aforementioned track contains the drum break used in the Chemical Brothers’ 1997 hit, “Block Rockin’ Beats.

Two new vinyl titles will be reissued this Friday (9/22) as part of Jazz Dispensary’s Top Shelf Series: The 3 Pieces’ Vibes Of Truth, the lost 70’s jazz-funk crossover classic off Fantasy, and Funk Inc.’s raw and funky, self-titled debut album off Prestige. This will be the first time in over 20 years these releases will be made available on vinyl.

The album-centric program, which is focused on reintroducing rare and previously unavailable titles, will offer a total of eight releases in 2017, including forthcoming reissues by Pucho and the Latin Soul Brothers, Azar Lawrence and more.

More about The 3 Pieces and Vibes Of Truth:
The 3 Pieces, composed of Lincoln Ross (keys), Jerry Wilder (bass, vocals), and Andre Richardson (percussion), were brought to Fantasy Records in the early 1970s by trumpeter and producer extraordinaire, Donald Byrd, who at the time was enjoying great success with his productions for the Blackbyrds. Byrd linked up with the Blackbyrds at Howard University while they were students in a course he taught. Lincoln Ross, the multi-instrumentalist leader of The 3 Pieces was also a former student of Byrd’s and allowed the forward-thinking jazz impresario to helm his group’s debut effort. Although The 3 Pieces failed to repeat the commercial success of the Blackbyrds, they created one astounding album that encapsulates the best of multiple genres: from silky-smooth R&B, to politically conscious jazz-funk grooves, Vibes of Truth has it all.

Long sought-after by collectors for the three club friendly tunes within its grooves, “Backed Up Against The Wall, “Concrete Jungle, and “I Need You Girl, this lost classic from the Fantasy catalog represents the very best of the mid-70’s jazz-funk crossover sound and fits perfectly in a collection next to the likes of the BlackbyrdsCity Life or RAMP’s Come Into Knowledge.

Pre-order Vibes Of Truth on Amazon.

More about Funk Inc. and their debut album:
Funk Inc. was founded in 1969 in Indianapolis, Indiana by Bobby Watley, Eugene Barr, Steve Weakley, Jimmy Munford and Cecil Hunt. During the 1970s they were signed to Prestige Records after their demo tape made it to the desk of producer Bob Porter. Despite their collaborations with legendary producers Rudy Van Gelder and David Axelrod during their five-album run with the label, jazz critics at the time hated the idea of combining jazz with funk and soul and gave their records negative reviews; however, the truth of the matter is that their material is some of the most infectious, captivating and hard-swinging music ever committed to tape. Funk, Inc. realized that jazz didn’t have to be extremely intellectual to be worthwhile, and its mission, which they succeeded mightily in carrying out, was to hook R&B fans with knockout grooves but expose them to the improvisational freedom of jazz.

An impressive, addictive brew of soul and funky jazz, their self-titled debut comes out of the gate swinging with the eight-minute organ groove-a-thon, “Kool Is Back” and never lets up. Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder, this unparalleled set in the soul-jazz canon, recalls classic 1960s Blue Note sounds by the likes of Grant Green, Lou Donaldson, and Brother Jack McDuff, but with added grit, guts and groove that combines the deep-pocket, hypnotic moments of The Meters with unparalleled improvisational passages that recall the best of modern-day practitioners Galactic, Robert Walter, and the Greyboy Allstars. Unvarnished, raw, and unabashedly funky, Funk Inc is a relentlessly infectious record dripping with charm that remains worthy of exploration by anyone with passing interest in the primal power of blues, soul, jazz, or funk.

About Rusty Bryant’s Fire Eater:
An unsung monster in the pantheon of exceptional soul-jazz outings from the Prestige catalog, Fire Eater finds Bryant grooving hard in a combo that featured Idris Muhammad on drums, Wilbert Longmire on guitar, and both Bill Mason and Leon Spencer Jr. on organ. Included in this stretched-out, funky set of four originals is the title track, “Fire Eater,” which was sampled for “Swing Set” by Jurassic 5 (2000) and appeared on the 1999 collaboration between DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist, Brainfreeze. While not as instantly recognizable by name as other greats of the tenor saxophone such as John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins, Bryant‘s fiery and athletic approach on this set sets him apart from his peers as a force to be reckoned with. In the strident groove and funky underpinnings of Fire Eater is the blueprint for generations of future groovers and funkateers. Essential.
